Health emergency in Venezuelan Amazonas indigenous groups
Overview
A health emergency has emerged in the Manapiare municipality of Amazonas state, Venezuela, impacting approximately 165 members of the Ye’kwana and Sanema indigenous groups. An outbreak of an unidentified disease has caused the deaths of three children, including a newborn and a six-year-old.
Reported symptoms include high fever, gastrointestinal distress such as vomiting and diarrhea, and acute respiratory complications like bronchopneumonia. Two children are currently reported to be in critical condition.
Indigenous organizations Wayamoutheri and Kuyunu have issued urgent appeals to the Venezuelan government and health authorities. They are requesting the aerial evacuation of critical patients to Puerto Ayacucho, the delivery of medical supplies to clinics in Tencua and Cacurí, and the deployment of specialists to identify the cause of the infection.
