Health risks from unregulated substances in Vietnam

Medical reports from Vietnam highlight severe health risks associated with the consumption of unregulated or traditional substances.

In one instance, a 49-year-old man experienced acute liver damage after consuming grass carp bile mixed with alcohol, a practice based on folk beliefs that it can ‘strengthen health’ and ‘nourish the liver.’ Medical experts noted that the toxin 5α-cyprinol sulfate found in certain carp species is heat-stable and can lead to jaundice and acute kidney injury.

In a separate case, a 28-year-old man from Son La died after consuming unidentified herbal medicines purchased online. The patient initially sought medical attention for respiratory symptoms, such as fever and chest pain, but his family declined hospitalization in favor of internet-sourced remedies. After two weeks of use, the patient developed jaundice and fatigue before entering a deep coma with dilated pupils.

Clinical tests at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases revealed critical levels of bilirubin and ammonia, leading to hepatic encephalopathy and diffuse brain edema. Despite intensive medical interventions, including blood filtration and plasma exchange, the liver and brain damage proved irreversible.
