Health risks of e-cigarette and vaping use

Overview

Medical and pediatric experts have raised concerns regarding the health risks associated with e-cigarette and vaping use.

Initial warnings from medical professionals highlighted the dangers to oral and respiratory health. Experts noted that aerosols containing nicotine and heavy metals can cause periodontal damage, jawbone erosion, and cellular damage in the respiratory tract. Research suggests these substances may lead to DNA damage and oxidative stress.

Subsequent findings from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) focused on the impact on children and young people. A review of 81 studies published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood linked vaping to respiratory issues such as wheezing and coughing, sleep disturbances, mental health problems, and eye symptoms. The review also identified risks to infants exposed to vaping during pregnancy, citing lower motor maturity and abnormal reflexes, and noted that childhood vaping often predicts future nicotine dependence and cigarette smoking. In response, the RCPCH has called for stricter government regulations, including limits on flavors and more rigorous packaging standards.

Further concerns have been raised regarding long-term health impacts that may only become clear after years of widespread use. While often viewed as a less harmful alternative to smoking, inhaled aerosols can cause respiratory irritation, inflammation, and potentially irreversible lung damage. Specifically, researchers have highlighted the risk of bronchiolitis obliterans, or ‘popcorn lung’—a condition involving scarring and narrowing of the smallest airways—which has been linked to the flavoring agent diacetyl. Although some regulatory bodies, such as the UK’s NHS, have banned diacetyl in regulated products, experts emphasize that the global rise in youth vaping represents a significant, ongoing health experiment.
