Healthcare and housing initiatives in Parksville

Overview

In early September, the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation launched a $1.2 million fundraising campaign to complete the Parksville Treatment Centre. This 19-bed facility is intended to provide abstinence-based addiction treatment through structured, publicly funded recovery plans lasting between 30 and 90 days. The centre aims to address regional gaps in care by offering psychiatric support, counseling, and transition planning to prevent patients from facing long wait times or expensive private services.

By late September, plans for a separate 10-mat seasonal shelter for unhoused individuals in Parksville were shelved. DayHomes Society CEO Shayla Day noted that the organization could not secure necessary funding from BC Housing before winter. The delay was attributed to a circular requirement where BC Housing necessitates municipal approvals and a confirmed opening date to finalize funding, while the society requires the funding to secure a site and date.
