Healthcare crisis in Ceuta
Overview
Public health officials in Ceuta have addressed concerns regarding outbreaks of infectious diseases, including diphtheria, tuberculosis, and meningitis. Dr. Julián Domínguez of the University Hospital of Ceuta (HUCE) stated that while there is public fear following reports of disease among migrant populations, existing surveillance, vaccination, and prevention strategies have been successful in managing risks.
However, the situation has since escalated into what local medical leaders describe as a “catastrophic sanitary, economic, and social situation.” Enrique Roviralta, president of the Medical College of Ceuta, reported that the city’s hospital is collapsed and medical professionals are experiencing significant psychological strain. The Andalusian Council of Medical Colleges (CACM) has visited the region to offer support, with CACM president Alfonso Carmona Martínez criticizing the central government for a lack of political will in addressing the crisis.
