In late July 2026, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category for Heart Aerospace’s X1 hybrid-electric demonstrator. This permit allowed the Swedish-founded company, which has relocated its R&D operations to the United States, to begin flight-test operations at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York. The X1 is a full-scale prototype designed to validate technologies for the planned 30-seat ES-30 regional airliner. The ES-30 aims to operate routes up to 200 km on battery power and up to 800 km using sustainable aviation fuel, with a target for commercial service by 2031. Commercial interest includes a letter of intent from Icelandair for five ES-30 aircraft, as well as support from strategic partners such as United Airlines and Air Canada. Heart Aerospace projects that its technology could reduce operating costs by more than 40% compared to conventional regional jets. On August 12, 2026, Heart Aerospace completed the first successful flight of the X1. The piloted mission lasted 27 minutes, reaching an altitude of 1,100 feet AGL using an all-electric propulsion system delivering over one megawatt of power. The aircraft features a 106-foot (32-meter) wingspan, a length of 23 meters, and a takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 pounds (11 tonnes). The company described the X1 as the “largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown.” While the flight consumed approximately USD 5 worth of electricity, the company noted this figure represents gross electricity consumption and does not account for maintenance, crew, or long-term battery degradation. While the X1 is purely electric, the upcoming ES-30 will utilize an independent hybrid architecture combining electric motors with conventional turboprop engines. In addition to United Airlines and Air Canada, the company has secured commitments from Mesa Air Group for the ES-30.
