Hellenic Navy unmanned systems development

Overview

The Hellenic Navy has advanced its autonomous maritime capabilities through the introduction of new technology and large-scale testing. In mid-October 2026, the navy unveiled ‘Pyrpolitis’, an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) designed and developed by Greek naval personnel. The five-meter vessel is capable of speeds exceeding 40 knots and is equipped for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, anti-surface warfare, and ‘One-Way Attack (OWA) kamikaze missions’.

Following this unveiling, the navy conducted the ‘UVEX 2/26’ technical exercise in the South Euboean Naval Base and the Saronic Gulf. This exercise tested a multi-layered fleet comprising unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), surface vehicles (USVs), and underwater vehicles (UUVs). The operation utilized swarm tactics to test the detection and engagement of surface and land targets, involving various naval commands and domestic defense innovation entities.
