Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome health response in Argentina

Health authorities in Argentina continue to emphasize the prevention of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a serious condition often caused by Escherichia coli infections that can lead to kidney failure and anemia. Following reports of a child in intensive care in Bahía Blanca, which investigations suggested may be linked to undercooked hamburgers, the Ministry of Health of Entre Ríos advised that children under five avoid ground meat products due to bacterial distribution risks during grinding.

In response to the situation and to commemorate the National Day of the Fight against Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome on August 19, the Ministry of Human Development organized a virtual seminar titled ‘Cuidar desde la prevención’. The seminar aimed to update health professionals on the prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of the syndrome, facilitating coordination between various medical and epidemiological teams across different regions.

While the Ministry of Health reports a sustained downward trend in cases over the last decade, particularly among children under five, authorities stress that prevention is critical as there is no specific cure. Transmission occurs through contaminated food, water, surfaces, or animal contact. To mitigate risks, organizations such as SENASA and the College of Nutritionists of the Province of Buenos Aires recommend strict hygiene protocols. These include thorough handwashing, cooking meat to at least 70°C, avoiding minced meat for young children, preventing cross-contamination, and disinfecting fruits and vegetables with potable water.
