HFSA 2026 heart failure clinical trial data

Overview

At the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) 2026 annual meeting, clinical data were presented for several heart failure treatments.

Cardurion Pharmaceuticals reported Phase 2 results for the PDE9 inhibitor tovinontrine. Initial data indicated that a 2.5 mg twice daily dosage most effectively lowered the biomarker NT-proBNP in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), maintaining a favorable safety profile. However, subsequent findings from the Phase 2 Cycle-2-PEF trial involving patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) showed that a higher 50 mg dose of tovinontrine improved plasma cGMP levels but had minimal effect on lowering NT-proBNP.

Additionally, Phase 3 trial results for eplontersen in treating transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) were discussed. Although the trial did not meet its primary efficacy endpoint of reducing cardiovascular mortality and recurrent clinical events, the treatment demonstrated improvements in patient quality of life, specifically regarding the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ).
