Himachal Pradesh health infrastructure expansion

Overview

In early August 2026, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a new INR 158-198 crore, 200-bed hospital at Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College in Chamba. The facility opened specialist services in psychiatry, gynaecology and dermatology and added equipment such as a CT scanner, a 3-Tesla MRI and plans for robotic surgery.

A few days later, Sukhu announced a statewide initiative to strengthen medical research and diagnostic capacity. A dedicated research department will be created at Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla, with similar units to be established in other colleges. An allocation of Rs 75 crore will fund automated laboratories at three institutions, and the government pledged instant access to MRI, CT-scan and X-ray services, direct procurement of quality medicines, and improved working conditions for medical staff.
