Escalating political disputes in Himachal Pradesh Assembly

The political dispute in Himachal Pradesh regarding the singing of patriotic songs has intensified during the Legislative Assembly’s Monsoon Session. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, staged a ninety-minute protest at Shimla’s Ridge, singing the National Anthem and all six stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ in front of a Mahatma Gandhi statue. This demonstration was a response to the state government’s decision to remove the complete version of ‘Vande Mataram’ from the Assembly’s proposed business.

Conflict persists between the BJP and the Congress-led government. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu previously accused BJP MLAs of disrespecting the National Anthem, a claim the BJP denies. Congress representatives have since dismissed the patriotic song controversy as a “diversionary tactic” intended to mask government failures regarding inflation and unemployment.

Simultaneously, the Assembly session has seen broader political friction. Congress leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, have protested rising inflation and accused the BJP of disrupting proceedings. In turn, the BJP has alleged organized corruption within the state government and accused the administration of evading discussions on healthcare, law and order, and unemployment.

Regarding his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jai Ram Thakur maintained that discussions focused on securing central assistance for families affected by monsoon damage. He questioned the effectiveness of current aid, asking whether central funds have successfully reached those devastated by recent calamities.
