Hindustan Zinc sustainability and community initiatives

Overview

Hindustan Zinc Limited continues to advance its environmental and community welfare initiatives across India. As part of its ‘Sustainability Goals 2030’, the company has restored 1,105 hectares of land through reclamation, plantation, and biodiversity enhancement efforts. This includes the planting of 850,000 saplings since 2020, with specific Miyawaki-style plantations in Rajpura Dariba, Chanderiya, Debari, and Kayad.

A notable 250-hectare ecological restoration project is currently underway at the Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter Complex in Rajasthan, conducted in partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). These efforts support a broader climate roadmap intended to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50 per cent and Scope 3 emissions by 25 per cent by 2030.

In terms of resource management, the firm has achieved a 3.32x water-positive certification and increased its renewable energy share to approximately 18 per cent in fiscal year 2026. The company’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure is further evidenced by its corporate head office, Yashad Bhawan in Udaipur, which has retained its LEED Platinum certification.

Expanding its social impact, the company reported that its intervention programs have reached more than 2 million women and girls through education, vocational training, and sports. The ‘Shiksha Sambal’ initiative has improved learning outcomes for over 47,000 students in rural government schools, with girls comprising approximately 50% of beneficiaries. Furthering technical and athletic development, the ‘Unchi Udaan’ program provides mentorship for engineering entrance exams to nearly 350 students, while the Zinc Football Academy supports female athletes through residential programs.
