Homicide rate declines in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica

Overview

Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica have reported significant reductions in homicide rates. In Trinidad and Tobago, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro announced a 44.2% reduction in homicides, with 265 recorded as of September 30, 2026, compared to 475 during the same period in 2024. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar later noted a nearly 46% decline in murders over a two year period, attributing the progress to legislative changes and increased resourcing for protective services.

Jamaica has also experienced a downward trend. Minister of National Security and Peace Dr. Horace Chang reported a 24% reduction in murders compared to the same period in 2025. As of October 6, 2026, Jamaica recorded 407 homicides, down from 534 the previous year. Chang noted that the third quarter of 2026 saw the lowest quarterly murder totals in over three decades, with September recording its lowest monthly total in more than 30 years.
