Honda outsourcing vehicle platform development to Tata

Honda is reportedly outsourcing the development of a new vehicle platform to the Indian engineering services provider Tata Technologies. This marks the first time the Japanese automaker has entrusted an external Indian firm with creating an entire vehicle architecture. The platform is intended to support multiple powertrain options, including internal combustion engines, hybrid systems, and pure electric drivetrains.

This strategic move is linked to Honda’s ‘Triple Half’ program, which aims to reduce development costs, time, and effort following significant net losses. While Honda has not officially confirmed the partnership, the company noted it continuously examines external partnerships to enhance competitiveness.

Analysts suggest the Tata-developed architecture may focus on smaller vehicles for developing markets, such as the Brio, City, or Elevate, which may require replacement by the end of the decade. This differs from Honda’s internal development of a mid-size platform slated for 2027 for models like the next-generation Civic and Acura RDX.
