The drought crisis in Honduras has intensified, with the scale of the impact expanding to 234 of the country’s 298 municipalities. Driven by the El Niño phenomenon, a precipitation deficit has placed 103 municipalities under indefinite red alert, 82 under yellow alert, and 48 under green alert. In the Central District, the crisis has forced an expansion of water rationing. Starting September 20, the supply cycle for residents in Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela will increase from every nine days to every 12 days. To mitigate this, Mayor Juan Diego Zelaya announced plans to activate 41 wells, with an initial 15 scheduled for operation between September and October to preserve reserves in the Los Laureles and La Concepción reservoirs. However, current projections suggest that potable water service in the capital may only be guaranteed until October, making the recovery of reservoirs a high priority. A tropical wave is expected to enter Honduras on September 18, bringing “generous” rains that could reach 80 millimeters in central and southern regions. The scarcity has prompted inter-institutional interventions to prevent a sanitary crisis, as authorities fear residents may store water in open containers, increasing dengue risks. The drought has also triggered a red alert in the Trifinio Region, affecting municipalities in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. In eastern Guatemala, the crisis is devastating rural livelihoods. In the municipality of El Jícaro, farmers report total losses of essential crops including peanuts, corn, and beans. Within the Central American Dry Corridor, residents report that well water levels have dropped to unprecedented lows, leaving families without subsistence food or market goods. This follows previous warnings regarding the receding water levels of Lake Güija, which threatens local fishing and agriculture shared by Guatemala and El Salvador.
