Honduran legal appeals regarding National Congress officials

Overview

The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice in Honduras has begun admitting multiple amparo (protection) appeals filed by former members of the National Congress’s Permanent Commission. These legal actions seek to challenge decisions by the Public Ministry that denied the applicants access to investigative files.

The investigations involve allegations of abuse of authority, violation of official duties, usurpation of public functions, and treason to the fatherland. Specifically, the probes stem from a session regarding a vote recount of the November 30, 2025, electoral process under Decree 50-2025.

Initially, the court admitted an appeal filed by the defense of Deputy Scherly Arriaga. Subsequently, the Chamber admitted 12 amparo resources in total, including two filed on behalf of former President of the National Congress, Luis Redondo. Magistrate Francisca Villela, coordinator of the Constitutional Chamber, clarified that the admission of these resources does not include a suspension of the contested acts, meaning the ongoing legal proceedings against the applicants will not be halted while the constitutional process unfolds.
