Honduran legislative and public health initiatives
Overview
In late August 2026, the Coordinator of Private Institutions for Girls, Boys, Adolescents, Youth and their Rights (Coiproden) proposed a new law to the Honduran National Congress to address child sexual abuse. The initiative, consisting of 31 articles, seeks to strengthen prevention, detection, and prosecution through mandatory protocols and specialized judicial processes to prevent re-victimization.
By September 2026, the National Congress approved a different legislative initiative: the ‘Honduras Cuídate’ National Program for Preventive Health, Nutrition, and Community Physical Activation. Led by the Secretariat of Health, this program aims to combat chronic conditions like obesity and diabetes by establishing nutritional and wellness clinics across all 18 departments and promoting physical activity through municipal coordination.
