Honduras fuel subsidy strain

Overview

In late July 2026 Honduras’ finance ministry reported that its fuel‑subsidy programme had already cost about 950 million lempiras, far exceeding the 680 million lempiras originally budgeted. The overspend was blamed on higher global oil prices linked to a Middle‑East conflict. To keep the subsidy running, the Treasury announced fund reallocations, use of contingency reserves and the creation of a new emergency budget line (partida 109) to improve fiscal transparency.
