Honduras six‑month six-month government review and drought response
President Nasry Asfura opened a press conference on 30 July 2026 to present a six‑month six-month review of his administration. He described the inherited challenges—paralysed institutions, abandoned projects, large debts and deteriorating services—and outlined actions taken: expanding school connectivity, thousands of surgeries, Community Medical Units, anti‑crime anti-crime measures, resumed infrastructure works, equipment for municipal distribution, reorganisation of public finances and the electricity utility ENEE, and efforts to secure international cooperation and jobs for Hondurans. Designated presidential María Antonieta Mejía noted that “putting the house in order” is unpopular with many, but stressed the president’s willingness to address structural problems. Two days later, Asfura highlighted concrete achievements from the first half‑year, achievements, stressing progress in health, education, security, infrastructure, energy and public finances. He urged Congress to approve reforms to stabilise ENEE and noted ongoing talks with the IMF for a new agreement. The report cited rising international reserves, fiscal discipline, distribution of school textbooks, reduced surgical wait times, drug‑supply drug-supply improvements, expanded police operations, road repairs, new dams and municipal equipment. The government also announced the registration of 2,700 new companies, pointing to private‑sector private-sector confidence and steps to streamline permits and regulations. By late August, Asfura defended his administration against criticism, arguing that impact should be evaluated over the long term. To address an extreme drought emergency, the government is preparing to distribute between 80,000 and 100,000 food sacks, with efforts to drill wells and construct reservoirs. Asfura also addressed reports of business closures in Choloma, stating he would review the situation while maintaining that many visited companies plan to expand.
