Hong Kong is reinforcing its position as a central hub for the Belt and Road Initiative. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po noted that the city is facilitating the expansion of mainland Chinese enterprises overseas and the entry of international businesses, citing significant trade growth with ASEAN, the Middle East, and Central Asia. During the 11th Belt and Road Summit held on September 9–10, 2026, the event gathered over 6,200 leaders from more than 70 countries. The summit facilitated over 60 Memoranda of Understanding and bilateral agreements, with a total value exceeding US$3.1 billion. To support market expansion, the summit introduced a ‘GoGlobal’ segment to assist mainland firms in utilizing Hong Kong’s professional services to access international markets. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po emphasized Hong Kong’s role in deepening ties with the Global South and the Middle East, particularly in the areas of finance, green transition, and innovation. Highlighting the city’s leadership in green finance, Chan noted that Hong Kong arranged US$20.2 billion in green and sustainable bond issuances in the first half of this year, maintaining its position as a leader in Asia for eight consecutive years. Expanding its focus on innovation and technology, Hong Kong Talent Engage and the EuroTech Federation co-organized a Europe-wide Information and Technology hackathon to connect international talent with the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. The event drew approximately 1,200 applicants from over 25 countries. Following the competition, a 90 percent of finalists reported increased interest in Hong Kong and mainland GBA cities. A delegation of winners visited ~~innovation~~ hubs such as ~~Cyberport~~ Cyberport, Hong Kong Science Park, and the Hong Kong–Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park to discuss industrial applications for artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology.
