Hong Kong Belt and Road Initiative development

Overview

Hong Kong is reinforcing its position as a central hub for the Belt and Road Initiative. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po noted that the city is facilitating the expansion of mainland Chinese enterprises overseas and the entry of international businesses, citing significant trade growth with ASEAN, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

During the 11th Belt and Road Summit, Hong Kong Trade Development Council Chairman Ma Shiheng emphasized that market diversification is a necessity due to a volatile macro environment, noting an expanding focus toward emerging regions including Africa and Latin America. To support this, the summit introduced a ‘GoGlobal’ segment to assist mainland firms in utilizing Hong Kong’s professional services to access international markets.

The summit also facilitated several strategic agreements. Notably, PCCW Global and Druid Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop one-stop IoT solutions, combining satellite and hybrid connectivity to serve the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, and other Belt and Road regions. These solutions aim to support remote monitoring in sectors such as logistics, transportation, and environmental management in areas lacking terrestrial networks. Other agreements were signed across the finance, industry, and construction sectors involving participants from countries such as Australia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Qatar.

In conjunction with the summit, the 2026 Shanghai-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Economic Development Forum was held to promote regional synergy within the Greater Bay Area. The forum, which included participation from the Macao Elite Association, brought together over 300 young elites to discuss scientific innovation, financing, and the internationalization of technology enterprises.
