HK police crackdown on organized crime, crypto fraud

In late July 2026, Hong Kong police launched a large‑scale operation targeting a triad‑controlled illegal debt‑collection network, resulting in 57 arrests and the seizure of drugs, cash and gambling equipment. A week later they moved against financial fraud, arresting a 67‑year‑old woman linked to a cryptocurrency investment scam and exposing a cross‑border Ponzi scheme marketed as “Fun Coffee,” which had drawn more than 30 Hong Kong investors and caused losses up to HK$5 billion, in cooperation with authorities in Macau, Vietnam and Singapore.

The investigation into “Fun Coffee” continued into August. Joint Hong Kong‑Macau raids seized cash, bank cards, mobile phones and cryptocurrency wallets, and eight suspects – one man and seven women, including company directors and promoters – were arrested on conspiracy to defraud. Authorities recorded over 225 complaints in Hong Kong and 264 in Macau, with reported losses now estimated at HK$104‑107 million (about US$13 million). Lawmaker Johnny Ng has been assisting victims and urging stronger anti‑fraud measures. The ongoing operations illustrate an expanding police effort to dismantle both traditional organized‑crime enterprises and increasingly sophisticated, technology‑driven fraud networks.
