Houthi militia security threats and geopolitical influence

Overview

Researcher Nadwa al-Dawsari testified before the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee regarding security threats posed by the Houthi militia in Yemen. Al-Dawsari warned that the group threatens international maritime navigation and regional stability, alleging that Chinese companies have assisted in weapon smuggling and that Russian experts were present in Sanaa in 2024 to assist in targeting ships. She argued that China and Russia are using the Houthi proxy to expand influence at the expense of American interests.

Al-Dawsari noted that while U.S. military strikes have reduced ballistic missile launches by 69%, they have not eliminated the threat. She advocated for increased political, military, and economic support for the Yemeni government to restore state authority.

Following the testimony, Houthi leader Hussein Hazeb launched personal attacks against al-Dawsari on social media. Hazeb questioned her Yemeni identity and labeled her a ‘soft tool’ used by foreign interests.
