Hubert Aiwanger political activities and death

Overview

Hubert Aiwanger, leader of the Free Voters and Bavarian Deputy Minister-President, recently expressed ambitions to expand his party’s influence from Bavaria to the German federal government. During a party assembly in Günzburg, Aiwanger criticized the federal government as an “intrusive state that has ideologically meddled into private matters” and announced plans to open a representative office in Berlin to support national expansion.

On November 4, 2026, Aiwanger was found dead in his room at the Hotel Neuer Fritz in Berlin-Mitte at the age of 55. He had traveled to the capital for the opening of the Free Voters’ new Berlin headquarters but withdrew from his scheduled speech due to health concerns, opting to be represented by other party officials instead.

The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office and the 6th Homicide Commission of the Berlin State Criminal Police have initiated a death investigation to determine the exact cause of death and rule out any possibility of third-party involvement. While some reports indicate that police have found no immediate signs of criminal involvement, the investigation remains ongoing.

Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder described the sudden death as an “absolute tragedy,” and Landtag President Ilse Aigner called it a “heavy loss for Bavarian politics.” Other political leaders, including Cem Özdemir, have also expressed condolences. Aiwanger, who had served in the Bavarian state government since 2018, is survived by his partner, Tanja Schweiger, and two sons. Following his death, State Secretary Tobias Gotthardt is expected to temporarily oversee the duties of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs.
