Human rights and discrimination in Moldova

Overview

A recent study on the perception of human rights in the Republic of Moldova indicates that citizens identify political life, healthcare institutions, and police interactions as the primary areas where discrimination occurs. While 61% of respondents believe the right to equality is respected to a large extent, 69% reported witnessing discrimination in various social contexts over the past year, and 42% reported experiencing such situations personally on a frequent or very frequent basis.

In a separate legal development, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that Moldova discriminated against the organization Genderdoc-M regarding restrictions placed on a 2013 LGBT Pride march in Chisinau. The court found that authorities failed to protect the right to peaceful assembly, noting that relocating the march outside the city center due to threats from counter-protesters was not a valid reason to limit this right. Moldova has been ordered to pay 4,500 euros in moral damages to the organization.
