Human rights concerns in Libya

Overview

Human rights organizations in Libya have raised alarms regarding escalating violence and legal impunity in the country. In Tripoli, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) documented a rise in arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances, alleging that the 111th Brigade of the Libyan Army has detained civilians at checkpoints and raided homes without judicial warrants.

In western Libya, the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has formally requested an investigation by the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor into alleged war crimes. The request follows recurring armed conflicts between militias in cities such as Zawiya and Surman. The NIHRL noted that national judicial authorities have been unable to investigate these incidents, leading to a state of continuous impunity. Recent militia clashes in Surman on August 4 resulted in at least eight deaths and dozens of injuries.
