Human trafficking and smuggling investigations in Thailand
Overview
The Thai Ministry of Interior and the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) launched an investigation into allegations that government officials provided advance notice of inspections to human trafficking networks. This follows an October 13 operation in Bangkok’s Saphan Sung district that dismantled a ring exploiting children and young women from Myanmar.
Investigators recovered chat messages suggesting officials used the LINE app to warn traffickers about planned raids on Khao San Road and Ratchadamnoen Road, allowing them to move victims away. Authorities also suspect that officials may have shared phone signal location data to help traffickers recapture escaped victims. The rescued individuals ranged in age from 5 to 28 years.
