Human trafficking investigations in Quintana Roo
Overview
Law enforcement operations in Quintana Roo, Mexico, have targeted human trafficking and exploitation. In late July, a joint operation involving the Mexican Navy and National Guard at a bar in Playa del Carmen rescued eleven women from sexual exploitation, resulting in the arrest of a bar manager.
By mid-August, security operations across Benito Juárez, Lázaro Cárdenas, Othón P. Blanco, and Tulum led to 242 arrests, the seizure of 26,310 doses of illicit substances, and the recovery of 64 vehicles.
In a separate investigation in Playa del Carmen, authorities rescued three female minors from Chiapas who were victims of labor exploitation. The adolescents were reportedly recruited in July with promises of employment but were instead forced to work 12-hour shifts preparing and selling corn products. Investigations by the Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office revealed that while the daily sales generated between 8,400 and 10,800 pesos for the accused, the victims were paid wages below the legal minimum.
Two women, identified as Angélica “N” (alias “La Patrona”) and Hortencia “N” (alias “La Güera”), have been formally charged with human trafficking. A control judge has ordered two years of preventive detention for both women as the judicial process continues.
