Human trafficking investigations in Romania

Overview

Authorities in Romania have conducted separate investigations into human trafficking operations involving organized crime and individual exploitation.

In one case, DIICOT arrested five members of a family for operating a criminal organization between March 2025 and August 2026. The group allegedly targeted vulnerable individuals by offering to pay off debts before seizing their identity documents and forcing them into unpaid labor in construction, animal care, and domestic tasks. Investigators reported that the group, led by a woman, treated victims as having “their own economic value” and intended to “sell” them for sums between 2,000 and 3,000 euros.

In a separate incident, a 20-year-old man was placed under preventive arrest for allegedly exploiting a woman through a fraudulent romantic relationship throughout 2025. The suspect is accused of transporting the victim to various counties to force her into prostitution using physical and psychological coercion. During searches in August 2026, police seized weapons and various sums of money.
