Human trafficking ring exploitation in Malaysia
Overview
Malaysian authorities dismantled a human trafficking ring through an initiative called ‘Operation Pentas Kasih’. During the operation, police rescued 17 Jordanian minors, aged three months to 14 years, who were being exploited for forced begging in pedestrian areas such as Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit.
Investigations indicate the ring was managed by Jordanian nationals who entered Malaysia on 90-day social visit visas. The group reportedly generated daily earnings of between 500 and 1,000 Malaysian ringgit by using the children to solicit money from the public.
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates is coordinating with Malaysian officials to manage the welfare of the victims and facilitate their return to Jordan. Ambassador Fuad al-Majali stated that the ministry is monitoring the situation via its embassy in Kuala Lumpur. Once the adult suspects return to Jordan, they are expected to face legal proceedings under national laws, including the Anti-Human Trafficking Law.
