Humanitarian crisis and military activity in Gaza

Overview

The Gaza Strip continues to experience intense military activity and a worsening humanitarian crisis. In late August, heavy bombardment involving Apache helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles in western Gaza City resulted in deaths and injuries. During this period, the Center for Palestinian Missing and Enforced Disappeared reported that between 2,500 and 3,000 people may have been forcibly disappeared, while an additional 4,000 to 5,000 individuals were estimated to be trapped under rubble.

On September 16, the situation escalated following the collapse of the ‘Al-Saada’ residential building in western Gaza City. The six-story structure, which had sustained significant damage from previous airstrikes, was sheltering displaced families. The collapse also impacted adjacent tents used by displaced persons.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that the collapse killed at least 16 people, including 12 women and children. While the Gaza Civil Defense and local volunteers continue rescue operations, efforts are severely hampered by a critical shortage of heavy machinery, forcing responders to dig through debris by hand. More than 60 individuals remain missing under the rubble.

This incident underscores the extreme risks faced by Palestinians living in damaged structures. UN officials have warned that approximately 400 other buildings remain at risk of collapse, a danger exacerbated by the onset of winter. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the total death toll from the conflict has risen to 73,789, with 174,798 people injured.
