Overview
Hungary is experiencing significant energy grid and cost challenges. Initially, extreme heatwaves and low water levels in the Danube—which forced a major nuclear power plant to operate at only 10% capacity—led electric vehicle charging providers to implement strict power limitations. Companies such as MOL, E.ON Drive Infrastructure Hungary, and Shell Recharge reduced or capped charger output to manage peak demand and mitigate pressure on the national grid.
Following these constraints, the industrial and logistics sectors have faced rising electricity costs. The Association of Hungarian Logistics Service Centers reported that the KÁT subsidy-related fee increased from approximately 2–4 HUF/kWh to nearly 15 HUF/kWh, causing some electricity costs to rise by nearly 30 percent. In response to these broader energy management issues, new technological partnerships have been announced to help distribution system operators better predict congestion and optimize energy distribution between industrial consumers, electric vehicles, and renewable sources.
