Overview

The Wesley Kincsei Primary and Secondary School, operated by the Hungarian Evangelical Brotherhood (MET), has received approval from the Ministry of Education to reopen. The school’s closure in August 2024 was previously ruled unlawful by a court, a decision that was upheld a second time in May 2026. Following legal victories and necessary renovations, the institution will initially launch its first grade for the 2026/27 academic year.

Parallel to the school’s reopening, MET is seeking the restoration of its official church status, which was lost in 2012 following changes to religious laws. Although the Constitutional Court previously ruled the loss of this status unconstitutional, the organization currently operates only as a religious association. MET leader Gábor Iványi has noted that the lack of official status impacts the funding and rights necessary to maintain educational and social services for disadvantaged groups.
