Hungarian independent gas stations survival crisis

The Association of Independent Gas Stations (FBSZ) has commenced its planned four-day demonstration at Kossuth Square in Budapest. The protest, which began on September 28, seeks to address the increasingly difficult conditions facing independent fuel providers and to facilitate dialogue regarding market survival.

During the demonstrations, association expert Gábor Egri highlighted a significant market disparity, noting that while large, partially state-owned companies achieve record profits, independent players struggle with wholesale and retail pricing and import challenges. Egri emphasized that the independent sector contributes approximately 360 billion forints in excise taxes to the treasury, yet lacks adequate support. He warned that without government intervention, the sector faces potential bankruptcy, which could jeopardize fuel supply security.

A central grievance remains the taxation structure; Egri noted that high fuel prices can cause stations to hit the revenue threshold for retail small business tax even when those revenues do not result in actual profit.

In response to the protests, Economic and Energy Minister István Kapitány acknowledged the issue but suggested that solutions must be found within free-market conditions. He stated that the businesses ‘must find it themselves’ and indicated he would not attend the forum due to his ministerial schedule.
