Hungarian inheritance law and asset distribution
Overview
Hungarian inheritance laws dictate how estate assets, unclaimed pensions, and funds are distributed. Certain bank account funds can be accessed by designated beneficiaries without formal probate proceedings, provided they supply proof of death and necessary documentation.
Unclaimed pensions may be requested by specific relatives, including spouses, children, or siblings, within one year of a death. If no legal heirs exist or they renounce their rights, assets and debts pass to the state or local municipalities. Since July 1, 2023, local municipalities inherit domestic real estate and its contents, while the state retains ownership of other assets such as vehicles, companies, and bank accounts.
