Hungarian rabbit meat consumption revitalization efforts
Overview
The Hungarian Rabbit Product Council is working to revitalize domestic rabbit meat consumption, which has reached extremely low levels of approximately 0.05 kilograms per capita annually. While Hungary is a significant producer in Europe, approximately 92 percent of its rabbit meat is currently exported.
To combat declining consumption and preserve gastronomic traditions, organizers are planning the second annual European Rabbit Meat Days in Hungary on November 21–22. The initiative aims to reintroduce the nutrient-rich protein to the culinary scene by inviting restaurants to feature rabbit-based dishes on their menus, following a successful inaugural event in 2025.
