Hungarian rail and transport service updates

Overview

Hungarian transport services have experienced various disruptions and adjustments due to accidents, scheduled maintenance, and holiday demand.

In mid-October, rail services on the S74 line between Nyergesújfalu and Lábatlan were suspended following a collision between a train and a motor vehicle. Additionally, planned infrastructure work on the Püspökladány-Kötegyán line required replacement buses between Vésztő and Szeghalom to facilitate the replacement of a brick arch bridge with a concrete structure.

By late October, the MÁV Group announced increased capacity across several InterCity, suburban, and regional lines to accommodate travel for the October 23 national holiday and autumn break. This included adding carriages to routes such as Balaton, Tópart, and Tokaj, while Volán deployed extra bus services to major regional cities.

As the country prepares for the transition from daylight saving time to winter time on October 25, 2026, MÁV-group trains and Volán buses are adjusting schedules. To support this transition and the autumn break, MÁV is maintaining increased capacity. Furthermore, replacement bus services are scheduled to operate on the Győr-Pápa-Keszthely line from November 2 to 8 due to ongoing maintenance.

Regarding the time change on October 25, MÁV-group and CFR have announced schedule adjustments. While most domestic and international services will follow the new timetable, certain night services and international trains crossing borders may experience brief pauses at stations to align with the new official time. This transition occurs alongside highly variable weather, with a cyclone expected to bring precipitation and temperature contrasts across the country.
