Hungarian swimmers European Cup disqualification

Overview

Hungarian open water swimmers Dávid Betlehem and Bettina Fábián were disqualified from a 10km European Cup race in Račice, Croatia, despite finishing in second and third place. The disqualifications were based on technicalities regarding the placement of sponsor and national lettering on their swimming caps.

In Betlehem’s case, a technical delegate’s instruction to flip his cap was reportedly not heard. Fábián was permitted to start with a red cap that was subsequently deemed non-compliant. Both athletes were only notified of the decision after the race concluded.

The Hungarian Swimming Federation (MÚSZ) has since filed an official appeal with European Aquatics to reinstate the medals. The federation argues the disqualifications were unjustifiable, noting that the caps met World Aquatics standards and that Betlehem had received his cap from an official referee. MÚSZ also cited inconsistent enforcement, pointing out that an Italian swimmer received a similar warning but was not disqualified, and that a replacement cap requested for Fábián failed to arrive before the start.
