Hungarian vehicle inspection and safety concerns

Concerns regarding the integrity and effectiveness of the Hungarian vehicle inspection system have emerged following reports of systemic corruption. Experts in state administration have indicated that many inspection stations may facilitate fraudulent testing through bribes, allowing unfit, poorly maintained, or illegally modified vehicles to remain on the roads.

Subsequent technical inspections conducted by the Institute for Transport Sciences and Civil Engineering (KTI) provided data on vehicle compliance. The KTI found that approximately one in six vehicles on the road possesses technical deficiencies. While compliance rates for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and heavy goods vehicles were reported between 85.5 percent and 88.6 percent, significant issues persist.

Common causes for these defects include neglected maintenance, operation under poor conditions, unprofessional interventions, and unauthorized modifications. Additionally, some vehicles were flagged for excessive pollutant emissions that significantly exceeded legal limits.
