On 31 July 2026, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán announced the termination of 25 ambassadorial assignments, including posts in Washington, Brussels, Moscow, London, Belgrade and other capitals, as well as heads of mission to NATO, the United Nations and other multilateral bodies. The decree, signed by President Tamás Sulyok, was presented as a professional renewal aimed at strengthening Hungary’s diplomatic effectiveness and international advocacy. The recall included specific senior diplomats such as Takács Szabolcs Ferenc (Washington), Kovács Tamás Iván (Brussels and Luxembourg), Konkoly Norbert Attila (Moscow), Kumin Ferenc (London) and Magyar József Zoltán (Belgrade). The decree, published in the Hungarian Gazette, also removed representatives to Oslo, Bratislava, Prague, Kyiv and various posts in Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific. By late August, the scale of the restructuring was contextualized as following a previous announcement in late June regarding the withdrawal of 37 heads of diplomatic missions. On 25 August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that approximately 34 mission heads out of 138 have been recalled. The ministry attributed these dismissals to a loss of political and professional credibility, as well as a failure to effectively represent Hungarian interests. This overhaul is part of an effort to implement a ‘4+1 year rotation system’ to ensure diplomats maintain strong ties with Hungary and to realign foreign policy with the EU, NATO, and the V4. Alongside personnel changes, the ministry is conducting an extensive audit involving the review of approximately 100,000 documents and the revocation of roughly 1,400 diplomatic passports due to alleged misuse. ~~The Minister noted that investigations may lead to the public disclosure of certain issues, such as past ventilator procurement processes.~~ New appointments have been identified for France (Balázs Ablonczy), Poland (Miklós Mitrovits), and China (Tamás Hajba).
