Overview
In early August 2026, Hungarian TV presenter Borbás Marcsi announced she had stopped using tap water for garden irrigation and limited lawn mowing because of an extreme heatwave and drought. Her social‑media post sparked criticism from followers who accused her of jeopardising crops, while others praised her attempt to model responsible water use. Marcsi reiterated that only well water was being used for a small kitchen garden and called on citizens to conserve water amid the prolonged heat spell.
The following day, authorities and private firms responded to the broader water shortage. Aqua Lorenzo Kft., a subsidiary of the Mészáros Group, began distributing bottled mineral water through the Hungarian Red Cross, the Ecumenical Aid Organization and the Baptist Service. Over 20 trucks delivered more than 453,000 litres of water to towns where tap supplies were temporarily unavailable, targeting the hardest‑hit areas as temperatures remained near 30 °C and a red‑alert heat warning persisted.
