Hungary housing construction surge

In July 2026 the Hungarian government announced a €35.3 million grant scheme to build or refurbish social‑rental apartments across municipalities outside the Bratislava region. The programme ties unit allocations to local demographics, reserving a minimum share for Roma households and for disabled persons, and sets long‑term affordability requirements. At the same time Budapest’s 4th district opened a limited call for young couples to rent subsidised units in a former youth dormitory.

A week later official statistics showed a 22 % increase in newly completed residential units in the first half of 2026 compared with the previous year, with 6,278 apartments finished nationwide. Growth was strongest in county towns and in Budapest, where 2,224 new units were delivered, the bulk concentrated in four districts. The average size of new homes rose slightly and most units were built for sale. Building permits indicate that a further 16,588 apartments are slated for construction in the same period, suggesting that the government’s funding push for social rentals is part of a broader expansion of Hungary’s housing market.
