Hungary NVVH leadership appointment controversy

Controversy has emerged regarding the leadership selection process for Hungary’s National Asset Recovery and Asset Protection Office (NVVH).

Initially, activist Áron Molnár criticized the appointment of the new head of the NVVH, expressing skepticism toward political opposition for not sufficiently challenging figures linked to the Fidesz party. Molnár argued that institutional change is hindered as long as key positions are held by individuals with party ties.

Following these criticisms, István Hantosi, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Justice and Constitutional Affairs, addressed allegations regarding the scoring system used during the selection. Hantosi clarified that the scoring scale was intended to indicate which candidates committee members wished to interview personally, rather than to evaluate professional quality. This response followed claims by Ákos Hadházy that the elected president, Anna Unger, would not have ranked among the top candidates under an objective professional assessment.

In light of the debate, the parliamentary committee has declared previous applications for three deputy president positions unsuccessful and will begin new recruitment processes for roles involving public finance, prosecution, and appeals.
