Hungary Southern Railway Ring procurement controversy

Overview

The Hungarian government suspended the Southern Railway Ring project and terminated the construction contract with V-Híd Építő Zrt. following allegations of procurement collusion. The decision was prompted by findings from the European Court of Auditors suggesting that V-Híd may have gained an unfair advantage by accessing confidential pricing information, particularly after the company acquired the project’s design firm, Kontúr Csoport.

The suspension risks approximately 320.4 billion forints in EU funding. While the State Audit Office denied failing to act on previous warnings, the European Commission subsequently notified the government that EU funding for the project would be withdrawn due to procurement rule violations.

In response to the exclusion of V-Híd from railway tenders, Fidesz politicians have characterized the move as a “political vendetta” intended to favor foreign multinational corporations over domestic companies, arguing that the decision threatens economic stability.
