Hungary tourism challenges

In late July 2026 the Hungarian government began overhauling its tourism approach. A temporary swimming ban was imposed at Helikon beach after water‑quality tests failed, and a regional Pécs‑Munich flight was cancelled following the German carrier’s insolvency. Low Danube water levels prompted restrictions on river sections used for drinking‑water protection, while a new tourism agency chief was appointed and an exhibition on Hungarian emigrants opened.

By early August, safety concerns dominated the narrative. Organisers of the Sziget music festival warned attendees against crossing the low‑level Danube, citing hazardous terrain. Concurrently, visitor numbers on Lake Balaton’s beaches fell sharply, with hotels reporting fewer guests and a modest rise in private rentals. Rising energy and labour costs strained tourism businesses, contradicting earlier government claims of record‑high tourism figures.
