Hurricane Polo impact expands across Mexico

Overview

Following the landfall of Hurricane Polo, a Category 2 storm near Las Barrancas in the Comondú municipality, recovery and relief operations have commenced in Baja California Sur.

Initial reports indicated significant infrastructure damage and service disruptions, particularly in Mulegé, Loreto, and Comondú. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that approximately 20,000 users lost power, while heavy rains caused landslides and debris on the Transpeninsular Highway. Although 24 temporary shelters were utilized to house hundreds of residents, no fatalities were reported.

In Mulegé, the Transpeninsular highway experienced total closures due to overflowing streams, though partial traffic has been restored in some sections. Coastal communities like Puerto San Carlos faced seawater inundation, damaging homes and infrastructure. In Comondú, heavy rains caused landslides and isolated several towns, including San Juanico and Las Barrancas.

As the storm progressed, its impact expanded beyond Baja California Sur. After entering Sonora as a Category 1 storm, it weakened to a tropical storm and eventually a remnant low-pressure system near Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua. The Valle de Empalme region in Sonora recorded rainfall exceeding 200 mm, resulting in significant flooding and the evacuation of hundreds of people by the Mexican Navy under ‘Plan Marina’.

While many residents in coastal communities have begun returning home, some areas remain isolated due to destroyed access roads. The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported that its hospitals in the affected regions remain fully operational despite minor structural issues or localized flooding. To address areas where road damage prevents land access, the Mexican Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) continues to utilize a maritime bridge to transport food, water, and equipment.
