Hydropower infrastructure development in the Balkans
Overview
Hydropower projects are advancing across the Balkan region. In Serbia, Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) has completed a 35 million euro revitalization of the Bajina Bašta pumped-storage plant, which provides 614 MW of capacity to balance the national grid. EPS is also progressing with the RHE Bistrica pumped-storage plant, a project intended to support 1,500 MW of new renewable energy capacity. Technical preparations for RHE Bistrica are ongoing, with a main facility tender planned for 2027.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the construction of a 12,125-meter supply tunnel for the Dabar hydroelectric power plant has reached its final concreting phase. This tunnel, described as the longest hydrotechnical tunnel in the Balkans, is a central component of the 664 million KM Dabar hydroelectric system overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Mining of Republika Srpska.
