Ibarra urban transport fare stabilization

Overview

The Ibarra Municipal Council approved a project to maintain urban transport fares at 35 cents until December 2026. This measure aims to protect approximately 130,000 daily users from a potential increase to 43 cents driven by rising diesel prices.

To support the four transport operators involved—La Esperanza, 28 de Septiembre, San Miguel de Ibarra, and Campesinor—the Municipality approved a total compensation of USD 912,738.75. Funding for this subsidy was secured by reorganizing municipal resources and reducing expenditures on mass concerts and foundation festivities.

By October 2026, the Municipality had disbursed an initial 151,000 USD to the cooperatives. In exchange for these payments, operators must adhere to strict quality and safety standards, including maintaining specific routes and frequencies, daily vehicle cleaning, and equipping buses with GPS, emergency exits, first aid kits, and panic buttons. A technical study is scheduled for January 2027 to reassess service costs and the condition of the vehicle fleet.
