Iberdrola market growth and European electrification efforts
Overview
Spanish energy company Iberdrola is approaching a milestone as it nears becoming the world’s largest private electric utility by market capitalization, closely challenging the American firm NextEra Energy.
To strengthen its domestic presence, Iberdrola has reached an agreement to acquire the electricity retail business of Contigo Energía in Spain. Spain’s National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) has granted first-phase approval for this transaction, which is expected to add approximately 100,000 customers to Iberdrola’s portfolio. This acquisition marks the first time Iberdrola has purchased a marketing company within Spain and is part of a strategy to accelerate the electrification of homes and businesses while offering stability against market fluctuations. Contigo Energía, a subsidiary of Gesternova, will continue to operate independently within the Iberdrola Group.
Following a reported record net profit of 6,285 million euros in 2025, Deutsche Bank upgraded its recommendation for Iberdrola to ‘buy,’ raising its 12-month price target by 19% to 22 euros per share.
During the Eurochambres Congress 2026 in Valencia, Iberdrola CEO Ignacio Sánchez Galán advocated for the accelerated electrification of the European economy. Galán argued that increasing electrification is vital to reducing Europe’s dependence on imported fossil fuels, noting that the continent currently spends roughly 400 billion euros annually on oil and gas imports. He suggested that redirecting even half of those funds toward electrification could lead to self-sufficiency in a few years, thereby enhancing Europe’s competitiveness, energy security, and autonomy against global economies such as China and the United States.
At the inaugural Iberdrola Legal Forum, Executive Chairman Ignacio Galán further advocated for increased investment in electrical grids to accelerate Europe's energy transformation. Discussions focused on addressing legal and regulatory challenges, with recommendations to establish stable regulatory incentives, streamline administrative permit procedures, and improve infrastructure planning to support the evolving energy model.
