IBSAMAR IX trilateral naval exercise
Overview
The ninth edition of the IBSAMAR maritime exercise concluded on October 20, 2026, in South African waters near Simon’s Town and False Bay. The biennial drills involved the naval forces of India, Brazil, and South Africa.
India acted as the lead nation for this iteration, deploying the stealth missile frigate INS Tarkash along with a Chetak helicopter and a special forces team. Brazil was represented by the corvette BrNS Barroso. South Africa contributed various assets, including the SAS Amatola frigate, Warrior Class inshore patrol vessels (SAS King Sekhunene and SAS Adam Kok III), the submarine SAS Manthatisi, and various aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The exercise included both harbour and sea phases designed to enhance interoperability, professional exchanges, and operational coordination. During the sea phase, participating vessels conducted simulations of asymmetric and aerial threats, anti-submarine warfare, boarding operations using combat divers, and surface target firing. Air support was provided by a Brazilian Super Lynx 300 AH-11B helicopter, an Indian HAL Chetak, and South African Gripen fighters.
The participating nations aimed to address common maritime challenges and build familiarity with each other’s procedures to foster a stable and secure maritime environment in the Indian Ocean and South Atlantic regions. Following the conclusion of the maneuvers, the Brazilian corvette Barroso proceeded to Walvis Bay, Namibia, for transit exercises with the Namibian Navy.
